The real difference between pressure washing and power washing, and which one a Myrtle Beach home, driveway, or roof actually needs.
The only technical difference is heat: power washing uses heated water, pressure washing uses unheated water. Both push water at roughly the same pressure through the same equipment. On the Grand Strand, the distinction matters far less than a third method most coastal homes actually need, which is soft washing at low pressure. Here is how the three compare and which surfaces call for each.
Heat, and nothing else. A power washer runs the water through an inline heating element, typically delivering it somewhere around 130 to 200 degrees; a pressure washer sends the same water cold. Both commonly operate in the same 1,500 to 4,000 PSI band with the same nozzles, hoses, and surface cleaners. In everyday conversation, and in most Myrtle Beach quotes you receive, the two terms are used interchangeably for the same visit. If the difference matters for your job, ask directly whether hot water is included rather than relying on which word appears in the company name.
Heat earns its keep on grease, oil, gum, and wax, which is why it shows up most on commercial work. For a typical residential job on the Grand Strand, heat adds little. For the majority of homes here, neither one at full force. Shingle roofs are worse still, since pressure blasts away the protective granules and shortens the roof's life. The right method for siding, roofs, screened porches, and painted wood is soft washing: low pressure under roughly 500 PSI paired with a cleaning solution that breaks the growth down chemically. Full pressure belongs on hard, durable surfaces such as concrete driveways, sidewalks, and paver patios, where a shrouded surface cleaner spreads it evenly and avoids striping. Not by itself. Price on the Grand Strand tracks square footage, surface type, access, and how much growth has built up, not whether a company calls the service pressure washing or power washing. Hot water can add modestly to a commercial degreasing scope because the equipment and fuel cost more to run. What should concern you more than the label is whether the contractor knows when to dial pressure down. A firm that pressure washes vinyl siding at driveway settings is the expensive mistake here, regardless of which term is on the truck.
Is power washing better than pressure washing? Not generally. It is better only for grease, oil, gum, and wax, which are mostly commercial problems. For the algae and mildew that coat Myrtle Beach homes, the cleaning solution does the work and heated water offers no meaningful advantage.
Can pressure washing damage vinyl siding? Yes, and it does so regularly on the Grand Strand. High pressure forces water behind the panels, cracks brittle older vinyl, and lifts paint from trim. Vinyl should be soft washed at low pressure instead.
Which method is used on a roof? Neither at high pressure. Asphalt shingle and metal roofs get a no-pressure soft wash only.
